Friday 27 September

The 3-day feast of talks, walks and stone-carving at St Mary’s Church, Iffley, will begin with an exploration with Philip Powell, geologist.

Philip will guide visitors around The Stones of Iffley Church and its Graveyard with the help of his collection of hand-lenses. He will highlight the characteristics of different types of stone. His enthusiasm for the wonders of the Juraissic era will infect visitors and help them learn how rock is formed, and how to recognise the typical components of limestone, sandstone and marble, and much more.

Philip Powell worked for 40 years as assistant curator of the geological collections at the University Museum of Natural History. His publications include The Geology of Oxfordshire and The Geology of Oxford Gravestones.
