Participants on the STONE-CARVING COURSE will meet the tutors, see the working environment of a stone-carver, and learn about stone, tools and safety. They will be encouraged to start designing their piece and, if time, to begin carving their own block of stone.

Each student will work with a wedge-shaped block of stone, specially prepared to form one of 9 voussoirs for a free-standing ‘Romanesque’ arch which will be exhibited – probably in an unfinished state – at the end of the weekend. Designs for each voussoir may be inspired by the carvings on Iffley Church, but participants will be free to work on original designs of their own. After the course the arch will be dismantled so that students can take their own block home. There will be opportunities after the course to complete any unfinished work. It is hoped that the 9 completed blocks will be reassembled in November (date tbc) for exhibition in Iffley Church.
